Riding the waves of excellence: Meet Orange Lutheran water polo star Logan Hetland

ORANGE, Calif. — At 16 years old, Orange Lutheran High School junior Logan Hetland has already made a name for himself in the competitive world of high school water polo. Known for his skill, determination, and leadership, Logan balances a demanding schedule of athletics and academics with a clear focus on achieving his goals. From his early days in Chino Hills to his rise as a top athlete, Logan’s journey reflects his passion, work ethic, and strong family support.

Local Roots and Early Beginnings

Logan’s journey began here in Chino Hills, where he attended Wickman Elementary School and Townsend Junior High School. A natural athlete, Logan immersed himself in sports from an early age. He played Legends FC Soccer and participated in NJB and club basketball, where he developed skills like teamwork, strategy, and discipline that would later benefit him in water polo.

Logan appreciates the sense of community in Chino Hills. “I love the small-town vibe,” he said. “It’s amazing to run into neighbors and family friends wherever I go.”

A Passion Sparked by Family

Water polo entered Logan’s life through his father, who played at both the collegiate and national levels. “My dad inspired me to play water polo,” Logan shared. “His passion for the game sparked my interest, and it quickly became my favorite sport.”

What started as a connection to his father’s legacy has grown into a deep love for the game. Logan’s positions as Center and Driver allow him to showcase his versatility and strategic thinking in the pool. “As a Center, I control the offense by scoring and distributing the ball to my teammates,” he explained. “Driver is another position where I work to get open, shoot from outside, and pass into the Center.”

Logan enjoys the physicality and complexity of the sport. “Water polo is so fluid—it’s like basketball, hockey, and soccer rolled into one,” he said. “The physical aspect and the teamwork it requires make it exciting.”

A Decorated Athlete

Logan’s dedication to his craft has resulted in an impressive list of accolades. His standout achievements include:

  • 2024 All-League Trinity Award
  • 2024 MVP for United States Water Polo Club Championship (16U)
  • 2024 MVP Orange Lutheran High School Water Polo
  • 2024 Top Scorer at Orange Lutheran with 105 goals
  • 2022 Junior Olympic Bronze Medalist

Each accomplishment is a testament to Logan’s hard work, competitive spirit, and ability to perform under pressure. His coach, Joe Molina, highlighted Logan’s relentless drive to improve. “Logan is a student in the pool as much as he is in the classroom,” Molina said. “He’s always asking questions about body positioning, game scenarios, and how to enhance his performance.”

Balancing Academics and Athletics

For Logan, balancing the rigorous demands of academics and athletics is one of his greatest challenges. With water polo practices twice a day, club team commitments, and a full schedule of classes, he relies on discipline and time management to excel in both arenas.

Logan has maintained a 4.0 GPA or higher throughout high school, earning recognition as a scholar-athlete for three consecutive years. His favorite subject is engineering, which he hopes to study in college. “Engineering allows me to be creative and learn how to build with different techniques,” Logan said. “It’s also what I want to pursue in college.”

Logan has set his sights on attending Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, or UC San Diego, where he aims to balance his academic aspirations in mechanical engineering with his athletic goals of playing collegiate water polo.

A Tight-Knit Family

Away from the pool and classroom, Logan cherishes time with his family. “Our favorite thing is vacationing at our place in Maui,” he shared. “Locally, we love spending time together at the beach.”

Logan’s family includes his parents, his 12-year-old sister, London, and their two pets: Zoey, a boxer, and Nobu, a cat. Their support has been instrumental in Logan’s success.

Outside of water polo, Logan enjoys surfing, snowboarding, and gaming.

Words of Wisdom and Personal Growth

Logan draws inspiration from the advice of his parents, coaches, and teammates. “The best advice I’ve received is from my parents: don’t beat yourself up for mistakes but learn from them instead,” he reflected. This mindset has helped Logan stay resilient in the face of challenges.

One of Molina’s proudest coaching memories came after Logan executed a flawless move during a game. “Logan scored a big goal for us off a beautiful spin move to receive a dry pass in the center position,” Molina recalled. “It was a move I had shown him earlier that week in practice. Seeing him execute it perfectly in a game was incredibly rewarding.

His personal motto, “Small steps every day lead to big results,” reflects his commitment to consistent improvement. “Staying consistent and training every day makes me a much better player and person,” Logan said.

A Bright Future

Logan’s goals are clear: to play water polo at the collegiate level, earn a degree in engineering, and continue striving for excellence. While he dreams of playing professionally, his immediate focus is on achieving success in college.

“Logan’s dynamic play style and elite conditioning make him a nightmare for opponents,” Coach Molina said. “He’s consistently creating matchup problems for every team we face. His best moments are still ahead of him.”

For Logan, water polo is more than a sport—it’s a way of life that has shaped his character, work ethic, and outlook on success. “Water polo has been such a positive influence in my life,” he said. “I’ve had amazing coaches and teammates who push me to be the best version of myself, both in the pool and in the classroom.”

With his dedication, talent, and drive, Logan Hetland is well on his way to achieving his dreams. Whether competing in the pool or pursuing his academic ambitions, Logan exemplifies what it means to be a true student-athlete; riding the waves of excellence and inspiring others to do the same.
